Andrew Shaw, Managing Director of Guardian Marine Testing said:
"The most immediate effect of winning the Best New Business Tees Valley award is the elation of being recognised outside the 'family circle' by an independent panel of judges who are taking a very open and honest view about your achievements as a company.
"The whole staff took it as a huge achievement. We weren't just a new company struggling to survive – we were really going places.
"The decision of the judges was further backed up when we went on to be declared overall winner at the North East Exporters Awards, so this is a very exciting time for us.
"In the year ahead, we will continue with our expansion plans, growing as a business to further strengthen our position within our sector."

Community Award Winner 2009:Dig It Projectswww.digitprojects.com
Dig It Projects has been designing and installing "Allotment style Gardens" into schools and community networks to allow the children and parents to GROW their OWN fresh fruit and vegetables.
We can also provide a "Workshop Program" to assist and guide you throughout the year to cover the "Planting and Growing" aspects of the garden and produce.
These projects provide a new concept to learning with excellent results. They can be accessed by the parents allowing them to interact with their children whilst educating both on how to grow fresh fruit and vegetables, at the same time lead a Healthier Lifestyle.
This year's Community Award winners Dig It Projects owner Richard Smith said "These garden projects highlight many benefits such as "Healthy Eating and Lifestyles", but also allows children to escape the everyday indoor classroom environment. Some of the children may respond better to being outdoors and the more "hands on" approach to learning, rather than the obvious restraints of a conventional classroom."
Environmental Award Winner 2008:Natural Warmth Companywww.natural-warmth.com
Last year's Environmental Award winners were Darlington-based company Natural Warmth. Set up by Managing Director Steve Heslop, Natural Warmth specialises in designing and installing environmentally friendly, low carbon home heating and hot water systems using heat pumps. This offers householders who care about the environment, a low carbon alternative to heat their homes and have a plentiful supply of hot water, without damaging the planet.
Steve Heslop said: "Winning the Best New Business Environmental Award was a terrific achievement for us especially as we were still in our first year. Since winning the award, we have completed over 30 installations across the region and have exceeded budget expectations, with a turnover of £750,000. With orders coming in from places as far apart as Leeds, Harrogate and Catterick, we are convinced that the 'green' message is getting through - certainly in our part of the world."
Natural Warmth has since gone on to become one of the first in the Tees Valley to win accreditation from the Government-contracted body that seeks to raise industry standards.
Natural Warmth has been awarded certification by the B.R.E. (Building Research Establishment Ltd) under its Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS) - this is designed to recognise best practice in companies utilising small-scale renewable energy technology.
Only 88 of these certificates have been awarded nationally for heat pump installation companies, with just two in the North East, so it marks a further significant development for the fledgling company and for the region.
